Most people know who they are - at the very least they know their own
name. I knew myself as Bonnie Sarvaunt, the niece of the elderly couple who raised
me, or rather, allowed me to grow up in their home. The two people who hid the truth
of my identity from the world. And from me. When I was fifteen, and opened the gift delivered to me by The Man, I learned that I was two people. And one of me was dead. Growing up in the depths of the Louisiana bayous, Bonnie Sarvaunt always knows she is different, and that what sets her apart isn't just her fair hair and extraordinary painting talent. At fifteen Bonnie receives a box containing a jumble of clues to her identity, but no help inputting them together; when she's twenty-one, she's given her independence in the form of a cheque for fifty thousand dollars. The clues she has send Bonnie straight to New Orleans, intent on finding out who she really is. But there are others who know who Bonnie really is. At least two sets of followers are watching her: one to threaten and one to protect. As shadows lengthen and a rosy sunset fades, angels in a graveyard turn black and sombre while an elderly woman thinks back on her life of shame and pain. Both her goals are now in sight. She will create another like herself, breeding in the necessary characteristics. And she will destroy the family DeLande.... |
