When I was fifteen, and opened the gift delivered to me by The Man, I learned that I was two people.  And one of me was dead
.

Growing up in the depths of the Louisiana bayous, Bonnie Sarvaunt always knows she is different, and that what sets her apart isn't just her fair hair and extraordinary painting talent.   At fifteen Bonnie receives a box containing a jumble of clues to her identity, but no help inputting them together; when she's twenty-one, she's given her independence in the form of a cheque for fifty thousand dollars.  The clues she has send Bonnie straight to New Orleans, intent on finding out who she really is.
