What else - your books!
Never written to an author before, but I want to say how much I am
enjoying PRESCRIBED DANGER. I've never tried any of your books
before, as normally I don't like American writers! This is because
I can't understand the Americanisms - I'm from the UK - and there
is usually too much explicit sex. But, you have
now doubled my list of American authors I enjoy.
The other one is Kathy Reichs.
I much prefer books written by women - and when I say books, I mean
detective/mystery books. A woman seems to have a surer touch when
describing emotions and the real world. Men seem to get too hung up about their own masculinity!
Anyway, thank you for writing a book I can get myself glued to, and I
am going to find the other Dr. Rhea Lynch books just as soon as I can.
Gillian Peall - UK
Hi Gillian!
....I am honored to be one of the two American
authors you read! But I warn you, I mess up on some of my (obvious) UK terms when I bring Shirl
into the picture! Well, okay -- I had her say Cheerio when she
walked into a place! DUMB! Even stupid Americans know better, me
included! Just stuck it in there in first draft as a reminder to
find some proper term and NEVER took it out! Anyway, I am tickled pink you like Rhea Rhea!
As to the Americanisms -- yikes! We do use odd phrases don't we?
When I had a UK publisher, they were careful to change anything too
blatant and I got used to leaving out the worst ones!
And as to sex... Well, Gillian, I tried to write romance once. And
I started giggling when I got to the sex scene. CANNOT write that
stuff. If I am laughing you know the reader would be laughing too....
Thank you for you interest in my books....

Hi, Ms Hunter,
Actually, I was quite desperate to read a book, any book that I first
ended up with your book DEADLY REMEDY, early this year. From that time
I was hooked on your Rhea-Rhea books. I
love the way you take romance at
the slow pace unlike the fast pace that most novel writes about.
It's a refreshing change to romance novels. I
hope that you will continue with this Rhea-Rhea series and I also hope that you can write faster.
Thanks.
Yours truly,
Nansee - Sabah, East Malaysia
Hi Nansee,
Thank you so much for your nice letter! It made my day! I always love
hearing from readers from far away places and Malaysia is about as far away as you can get.
I am glad you appreciate my writing style and are enjoying Rhea-Rhea's
adventures. It is amazing that she is universally accepted.
....GRAVE CONCERNS is the fourth book in the Rhea Lynch, MD. Series and may be the last!
While I had planned for more books in the series my
publisher has requested that the next two books on my contract be
standalones, rather than part of this series....
I hope you enjoy GRAVE CONCERNS.
Thank you for you interest in my books.....

Hi Ms. Hunter,
Thank you for replying to my e-mail. I have ordered your latest book from
the local e-bookshop and they said the book is on the way. I have no
problem with other people reading about the pleasure I found from
reading your books. In fact, I would say that
it's a pity that this would be the last book on your Rhea-Rhea series. It
would be a waste to leave the Rhea-Rhea series
hanging like this. I hope that your publisher will change
their mind about the Rhea-Rhea series. These books are really very,
very refreshing from the norm of romance novels. For your information, all
your Rhea-Rhea books except your latest, GRAVE CONCERNS, are all out of
stock from my local e-bookshop. I would say that
your books are well received here on this side of the world. Just put your
best into words and let them speak for you.
Keep up the great work!
Nansee

Love your books!!!
So many authors write so call "medical based" books but yours seem
so much more realistic because the characters are like the people
I know and speak to every day. In you
second book "PRESCRIBED DANGER" the one most out standing statement that I have heard in a very long
time was made "Race wars my black ass, Wallace said. "that's why
there won't be race wars in this country. Four white officers
rescuing a black man and child." He crossed his arms, the
possibility of such a war laid to rest.
After September 11, and now with the war, I hope statements like
that will always hold true here in the U.S.A. Please always
include statements like that in your
books and they will always be read by people
like me, who are proud of the way we were raised to think.
You have to help anyone in need just because it
is the right thing to do!! That is what we
really mean when we say "neighbors helping neighbors".
Keep on writing and know that I look forward to each and every book!!
To Someone who know what coming for the Carolinas really means.
From Someone who loves to read really good books,
Debbie - Winston Salem, NC
Hi Debbie,
....Thank you so much for your kind letter! It made my day!
I am glad you appreciate the little comments like that in Rhea-Rhea's
books. I think people from other parts of the country forget that
the past can be buried -- even here in the bloody south! Helping
people is what Rhea, and so many medical professionals, are about.
Race, color, creed, religion, even guilt or innocence do not
matter. What matters is the need. And while I work at not being preachy, I feel people
need to hear the truth more often!

Dear Ms. Hunter,
As an English teacher and avid mystery/murder reader, I am delighted
to have found your books. While browsing in Amazon.com, your name
was suggested as an author I might enjoy. Our local bookstore had
nothing (I will try to remedy that) so I went to a "big" town and
found DEADLY REMEDY which I bought and thoroughly enjoyed. I
purchased DELAYED DIAGNOSIS yesterday and cannot wait to find out
how it all began with Dr. Rhea.
I live in Lake Placid, FL, which sounds a lot like Dawkins County.
It is a small rural community that is also growing too rapidly. My
mother was an RN and the medical thriller is a favorite of mine.
Your characters are alive and vibrant and are strikingly human. One
thing I always try to get my students to do to interest them in
reading is to visualize the characters and settings; to run a movie
in their minds of what they are reading. I wish I were more
successful with this, but improvement is made every day.
Thank you for a wonderful character in Dr. Rhea and may she live for
many years to come.
Sincerely,
Tina - Lake Placid, FL
Hi Tina,
.... I am always so honored to receive fan
letters like yours -- people >who love the genre
and like well developed characters! It is SO hard
to develop characters in a single novel -- and SO much easier to do
so in a series!
I actually fell in love with writing because of my 10th grade writing
teacher, Carol Kohler. She made the mistake of encouraging me,
telling me I had talent! I was a talentless kid in a talented
family to that point and Ms. Kohler changed the
course of my life. I looked her up in an
Internet search a couple years ago, and she is still
teaching up north in a cold and windy state, still encouraging
students to write, to rewrite and to change their work for the
better. She, too, says it is a slow process!
.... I too fell in love with the denizens
of Dawkins >County! I was hoping Rhea-Rhea would
go on for ever! However she will end, hopefully
temporarily, after book four because the
publisher has decided I should write standalones. I am hoping the
sales of GRAVE CONCERNS will persuade them to change their minds
after a couple books in a different vein!
.... Watch for GRAVE CONCERNS in late December!
My very best,
Gwen Hunter
November 20, 2003
Dear Gwen,
Just read DEADLY REMEDY and have to tell you it
was great! As an avid reader, and lover of
medical thrillers, you have a terrific style and
attention to detail that kept me riveted the entire book. I
read the book cover to cover, at one sitting, to the detriment of
housekeeping and hubby-tending, and couldn't wait to get to the
next page. I loved the chapter titles and the
titillating glimpse they gave of the content.
Somehow I missed PRESCRIBED DANGER and
DELAYED DIAGNOSIS, but I am on my way to the
bookstore to find them both.
It'll just be like a RheaRhea flashback.
I can't wait for the next book and am now a devoted fan!
Sincerely,
Barb - Glen Burnie, MD
Dear Barb,
It seems only fair that you neglected housework and your hubby while
reading about Rhea-Rhea -- I do the same when I'm writing about
her! <G>
....Let me know what you think of the first two
books. I hope you like them as much as DEADLY
REMEDY. Reading them out of sequence is a pain
to series lovers, but they do all stand alone. And GRAVE
CONCERNS should be out in late December
so you will have four books in the series in a
relative short time.
I am delighted to have a new fan!
Gwen Hunter
Dear Gwen,
I loved both DELAYED DIAGNOSIS and PRESCRIBED DANGER! It would have been
nice to have read them in sequence, but there were different
insights into the characters by reading them
this way. I went to the bookstore the same day I
sent the email and was lucky enough to get both. My wonderfully
tolerant hubby not only took me, but acknowledged on the way home
that I would have to read them immediately and
he would make himself scarce. I did just that
when we got home. I can't wait for GRAVE CONCERNS to come out in
December, and have already requested it as an early Christmas
present.
I took a speed-reading course in school (it was the "olden days" and my
class was part of an experimental group) but I enjoy the vivid
pictures you invoke so much that I consciously
don't speed read your books! The pace is fast
enough that it's unnecessary. That's something I haven't done with any
other author. And that group includes the likes of Robin Cook,
Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs.
One of my best friends shares my love of reading, also with an affinity
for medical thrillers. Although she's in another
state now, I had to call her and tell her about
Rhea-Rhea and the series so she could look for them.
... I think we need to start working on your
publisher now to not limit the number of Dr.
Rhea Lynch novels. After all, Jonathan and Faye
Kellerman are enjoying long-lasting success with their respective
protagonists. So have the authors previously mentioned and
countless others. I'd like to think Dr. Rhea
will be around for a long, long time.
Sincerely,
Barb
November 9, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your Dr. Rhea Lynch series. I have always been a huge fan of authors of medical thrillers such as
Robin Cook and Michael Palmer. I found out about your books as I
was browsing on Amazon.com. Your series was
listed on one of their customers "must read"
lists. I really enjoy reading books in a series,
such as yours, where I can really get "involved" with the
characters and follow their relationships. Unlike other authors,
you have done a remarkable job developing the
characters---I feel like I really know them!! (I
would absolutely love to have Miss Essie as my
housekeeper!!) Keep up the great work. I can't wait to read your fourth book!
Are you still offering the signed bookplates?? If, so I would love to have one!
Sincerely,
Kim - Flower Mound, TX
Hi Kim,

Hi! I just wanted to write that I love
your books. I met you at a book signing at
Waldenbooks this past summer where you signed you first
book for me. Upon finishing, I
immediately bought the other two. I am anxious for
the newest installment to come out. If you could please send me
bookplates for the second and third books I would be ever so
grateful. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Susan - Langhorne, PA
Hi Susan,
How nice to hear from you! I'm so glad you're enjoying the books.
I'll send those bookplates right out along with a teaser from GRAVE CONCERNS.
Thanks for writing!

October 30,2003
Dear Gwen
I felt that I just had to send this e-mail to you , to say thank you
for the pleasure your book PRESCRIBED DANGER gave me.
I particularly liked the chapter headings, its something one seldom sees today.
I hope to be able to get your other novels soon but I have had no luck so far.
I have read several medical novels Robin Cook etc but your one is
second to none please keep them coming with that lovely Dr Rhea and
her English sidekick Sarah I love her humour,
cockney's are really like that , I know I was brought up there.
Thank you once again,
Yours sincerely,
John - Colchester, Essex, England
Hi John,
....It is always nice to hear from folks across
the pond. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book.
Rhea is a lot of fun to write about and Sarah is
always a hoot. I never know what she is going to do next! It's
nice to know she is appreciated by a fellow cockney.
I hope you are able to get the other books. You have to get caught up
by year end when GRAVE CONCERNS, the fourth installment in the
series, comes out! You should be able to find the books on
amazon.uk if not in your local bookstore.
Thanks again for your nice letter....
Sincerely flattered,
Gwen Hunter
October 10, 2003
When is her next adventure/story coming
out? This one was a cliff hanger & I can't wait to see what happens
with her & the sheriff Mark & the other characters. Are you going to bring
Ms. DeeDee back in the next one or will
she just make a cameo appearance?....
Thanks
Monique - Columbus, GA
Hi Monique,
....I'm glad you are enjoying the Rhea-Rhea
books. She is a great
character, along with Miss Essie and all the cast, ....
The people of Dawkins developed
their own personalities and helped to write the
books. It had a
synergy that just worked....
Watch for GRAVE CONCERNS near the end of December.
It should be wonderful....
It is readers like you, who love Rhea-Rhea, who
may keep her coming back. At least I hope that will happen, because I do
indeed have a storyline picked
out for Miss DeeDee. Right now, the publisher wants
me to do standalones for the two books
following. Only if the numbers of sales are good, will Rhea be back after GRAVE CONCERNS.
My best, and thank you for writing,
Gwen Hunter

RE: Law of the Wild
Ms. Hunter,
I am desperate to find a copy of LAW OF THE WILD. I read your Rhea
Lynch series and loved it, so while I was waiting for the next in the
series, I started reading the DeLande books. I found BETRAYAL
and FALSE TRUTHS and I am hooked!!! I read both of them in less than a week...LOL. I cannot
find a copy of LAW OF THE WILD anywhere. Can you help me? I am willing to buy a
signed copy if you have any.
Thanks so much,
Sara Pine - Arlington, TX
Hi Sara,
....There will be a reissue edition of BETRAYAL out soon and FALSE TRUTHS
and LAW OF THE WILD will follow. But that will be a while. Maybe that
will create new interest in the DeLande Saga.
Meantime, be sure to watch for GRAVE CONCERNS near the end of December.
Thank again for writing!
Gwen Hunter
It is so good to hear from you. A few weeks after I emailed you I found a hardback copy
of LAW OF THE WILD on abebooks.com that someone in California was selling. I paid a bit more
than your price, but it was well worth it. I have to say that BETRAYAL is
my favorite book in that series. The other two are also good, especially
since you already know some of the characters.
I am looking sooo
forward to the next Dr. Rhea book. I graduate from college in a few
weeks, and it will give me so much more time to read whatever kinds of
books that I want instead of studying!! Anyhow, are you doing bookplates
for the DeLande books? If you are, could you send me those three also? I
have to say once again that I think you are an awesome storyteller and I
am looking forward to the next book. (I have one of the books that you
co-authored, I need to read it.)
Sara Pine - Arlington, TX
August, 30 2003
Those spectacular DeLande books ...
Ms. Hunter,
I don't normally write authors. Most are busy at work.
Rarely, however, books get under my skin in such
away that I just can't stop thinking about
them. This is what's happened with both BETRAYAL and FALSE TRUTHS. To the point where I've
raved to just about everyone I know about how enjoyable they were.
My main reason for dropping a note is just to let you
know that there are many, many people out here that think
you're quite the master of your craft. I'm sure you've
gotten other things to the same effect, but I couldn't let the opportunity pass by, since
your website offered the address so easily.
I've had both books since 1996, I believe it was. I was
a senior in High School, but encountered you at a signing at 'The Bookworm' and picked up
both books. It wasn't until just at seven years later that I actually read them. They had gotten
shuffled out of sight in a move. Then I didn't
have much time to read anymore with school, and
then a job, and another move. Finally, I unearthed
them, a little battered about the spines but still quite
whole, and devoured them both within three days. I couldn't stop.
Unfortunately, the fact that I don't possess LAW OF THE
WILD put a stop to that, leaving me to crawl around until
I found one for sale at 'www.abebooks.co.uk'. It's
likely the UK printing, but there's no shame in that!...
I've been filling time by settling into Rhea Lynch until it arrives, another set of books that are delightful.
Now that I've rambled, a question pops into my head that
I've not been able to find the answer to from someone
personally. When you began (I believe it was with a
co-writer), how precisely did you manage to break through
the struggles of a fledgling in 'the business'? Was it
through perseverance with a solid manuscript, or a few
chapters and an outline, or through a combination of
submitted work and a resume of periodical work? I know
it's a rough path to walk, and more over, a rare one to
make a 'living' from, but it always has been an idea I
toy with while knowing I'll almost certainly always have
to work in a scheduled occupation as well. A 'real' job.
I simply was hoping you could tell me where you began to
succeed. Where you pointed yourself that seemed to be the proper direction.
I should note that I read the reply to Mary in California
regarding a similar question. The figures of 'success',
while daunting, still do little to deter. Everyone needs a challenge in their life, after all.
I realize that you may not have time to actively reply,
and understand that. Either way, I simply wanted to
thank you for the effort and time you put into novels
that will surely become the favorites of many. I'd also
like to boot a publisher into soliciting a few more books
settled around the DeLandes, but that's not quite as easy as simply saying thank you'.
Jason - Rock Hill, SC Hi Jason,
....BETRAYAL and the DeLandes will always hold a special place in my heart, and I still want to
find a publisher to pick up the family story. They were my first literary pals and mean much to me!
Actually, my agent is looking for a home for LAW OF THE WILD and two other books in the same vein.
And...BETRAYAL is about to come back out in reprints as a Trade Paperback.
I'll be signing my new book GRAVE CONCERNS, which is the
fourth in the Rhea Lynch, MD. Series, at Waldenbooks in
the Rock Hill Galleria on Friday, Jan. 9th.
Come by if you can. We can talk about the publishing
market, if you like. I am a member of South Carolina
Writers Workshop and you should join if you are really
wanting to write and publish. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays.
Thank you for writing,
Gwen Hunter
August 20,
2003 Hello Gwen,
Whilst I am really enjoying reading PRESCRIBED DANGER,
I would just like to tell you how amusing I find
some of the phrases spoken by Shirley. I am
English. Have been living in NC for just over 2 years
now. There are many differences between the two languages and
cultures but portraying them in writing can be quite difficult. I
would like to point out an error though. Shirl drives up to meet Rhea
and says "Cheerio love". Cheerio is a farewell and would never be
used when meeting someone. I was trying to think of an alternative
but there really isn't one. We generally would say "hello" and
depending on the circumstance, emphasize a
certain syllable. I also can't believe that Shirl
who went to a 'posh' school would revert to the
dialect of the east end of London. The Eastenders accent would
not be one that anybody not born there would want to impersonate.
Anyway, I shall enjoy the rest of your book.
Regards,
Clare - Salisbury NC Dear Clare,
.... I NEEDED you to tell me about Shirl. I can't
believe that I had her say "Cherrio love" as hello! ARRRRG! I know better, actually!
Perhaps I'll send you sections on Shirl as my UK expert for future books!
And since you picked up on the East-ender talk -- I spent a bit of
time of time in London on two book tours and that is where I devised
Shirl. She has a hidden past as a rebellious teen with friends in
the South and East London who were forbidden to her by her parents.
If the series lasts long enough, readers will meet her sister, also a
rebel, and find out about her family roots.
Thank you so much for writing!
Gwen Hunter
August 18, 2003
Dear Gwen,
"... belonged to a City, not a family...My mama was the black
sheep ...I was the refuse."
These words are of the level of literary genius. In time, the reading public will surely come to
appreciate your talents.
Miss Essie continues to be your most entertaining character. Your
denial that she exists independently as a real person has been
overruled by fictional reality. Don't deny
what you create. The final dialogue Rhea's front porch between Cam, Essie and
Rhea was delightful. Miss has the ability to bring beads of sweat to the foreheads of both
characters and readers alike.
I look forward to your new work.
Charlie - Rock Hill, SC Hi Charlie,
What a nice letter! You DO flatter me.....
Gwen
August 10, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I have just one problem with your writing. You can't do it fast
enough! Seriously,
I really enjoy your writing. I hope you will take it as a compliment to
be compared
to Patricia Cornwell. I thoroughly enjoy her writing also.
Your characters are so real that I find it disappointing that I can't call
and have a
cup of coffee with Dr Rhea-Rhea.
Peggy
Thank you Peggy!....
Gwen
July 20, 2003
I found your books from a review of the first Rhea book in a magazine. I think Southern
Living. I am hooked. I have read the Rhea series to this
point. Started on the DeLandes. Ordered the Gary Hunter series. I am
having a hard time finding LAW OF THE WILD and ASHES
TO ASHES. Do you have some suggestions?
Thanks. Keep writing. Love your style.
Al - Iron Station, NC
Hi Al,
....Oh My -- the Gary Hunter series. Hmmmm.
Well, it will certainly be a different kind of reading experience after the DeLandes and Rhea....
As to ASHES TO ASHES and LAW OF THE WILD, they are out of print and I've sold
out of the few I had. Those two books were never published in the USA. My agent is hoping
to sell them to a US publisher soon, so it is not impossible that
they will be back in print with other books, but as for now -- even
I can't find them except for a RARE copy on used
bookseller sites, Amazon, B&N, or half.com. Sometimes they can be fond on amazon.uk.
(there are links to these sites on my ORDER page) And they can be VERY pricey!
My best, and thank you so much for the nice letter.

July 17, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I just finished reading my second Dr. Rhea Lynch novel [PRESCRIBED DANGER] which I thoroughly
enjoyed.
I know that it's fiction and you can have a Camp Pendelton with
Marines anywhere you like(p.199). However, the only real places in
South Carolina with Marines are MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) Parris Island and
MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) Beaufort. Might the Camp Pendleton which you referred to be in
California? Just a minor point, but you know how we hate it when medspeak is used incorrectly.
Same for Marinespeak.
Regards,
Rick Villa - Dublin, CA
Hi Rick,
....I am so glad you enjoyed PRESCRIBED DANGER.
You are absolutely right about the military-speak. I have to admit to a small brain-fart there
(technical term). In my rough draft, I wrote that the camp was in
So. Ca. And when I corrected the final proof, I corrected that, without thinking, to South
Carolina, not Southern California. I NEVER caught
it. My copy editor didn't either. I write so much about SC, that I
simply didn't see the error. believe it or not only a few people
have written to me about that error. I don't
know if that is a good thing a bad thing!....
Thank you for you interest in my books....
Semper Fi!
Gwen Hunter
July 16, 2003
Ms. Hunter,
... First off I want to know if you are the same author that wrote BETRAYALand
FALSE TRUTHS? If so I am so happy to talk to you as FALSE TRUTHS is my
FAVORITE book in the entire world! (and I have been reading novels since
I was six so I've went through quite a few by now...)
Anyways I have read your new novel DEADLY REMEDY and I think that is is
wonderful! I enjoyed it so much I am going and reading the other ones
in the series because I did not know there were more until now.
Please reply and tell me if you did indeed write the previous two books
that I mentioned. And any other book titles that you have done also I
would like to know. ...
Thank you for your time.
Amanda - Oro Station, Ontario
Hi Amanda,
... Yes, I am the same Gwen Hunter who wrote BETRAYAL and FALSE TRUTHS.
I also wrote LAW OF THE WILD, which is a DeLande spinoff, which I hope
will be back in print someday with the two other books in the series.
My agent has been working on that for several years and he is still hopeful,
but it is SO SLOW! I'm glad you loved Rhea-Rhea. She is my favorite character
ever, along with Miss Essie of course ...
GRAVE CONCERNS is out now. ... though I'll warn you -- it starts out ROCKY!
...
My best, and thank you for writing,
Gwen Hunter
July 10, 2003
I have just finished reading
DELAYED DIAGNOSIS and DEADLY
REMEDY. They are some of the best books that I have ever read and I
have read a lot of books. I am looking forward to reading more books about
Rhea. I feel as if I really know her and can't wait to read more. Keep up
the great work! If you have time to email me back that would be great, if
not I understand.
Thank-you.
Bonnie - Kanata, ON, Canada
Hi Bonnie,
....I'm glad you're enjoying the Rhea-Rhea
books. She is a great character to write about, along with Miss Essie and
all the cast, and I had hoped to keep writing her for many books. The
people of Dawkins developed their own personalities and helped to write
the books....
Gwen Hunter
July 7, 2003
Gwen Hunter,
I am a great admirer of your books, namely - the 'DeLande' series,
excellently written. However, I do not like your new style of
writing - the latest book I purchased was totally
depressing and not the type that intrigued and held me to read anymore. I will not buy the 'Dr.
Rhea' books again. Please return to your previous quality of style. Can I look
forward to your original style again? - which is, after all, what
made you popular.
Yours,
Mary - Liverpool, England
Hi Mary,
....I am glad you like the DeLande series and I would LOVE to write about them again -- but
after STOLEN CHILDREN they didn't sell well enough for
the publisher for that series, Hodder & Staughton, to pick
me up for more books after LAW OF THE WILD.
I understand medical thrillers are not everyone's "cup
of tea" but the Rhea Lynch, MD. Series is selling well enough world-wide for at least one more
book and people seem to love her too, but
in different ways from the DeLandes.
There will be a second edition of BETRAYAL ( U.S. title for STOLEN
CHILDREN) out soon. Maybe that will create new interest in the series.
I do have many more stories I could tell in the DeLande
Saga if I can find a publisher that's interested.....
Maybe you'll like what comes after the Rhea
Lynch, MD. Series -- I'll have a book out in the latter
half of 2004 that is a departure from the medical style of the Rhea Lynch,
MD. novels.
Thank you so much for writing!
Gwen Hunter
July 6, 2003
Hi Gwen,
I have really enjoyed your Rhea Lynch series. I've been an
RN for 22 years and I love reading something that is realistic, yet
you feel like you know the characters as friends when you finish
the book. Miss Essie is awesome! I have patients just like her! I hope Rhea and Mark live happily
ever after, but I know you have yet to work that out. I would love to have the bookplates. Do you ever
come to North Carolina? I looked at the site calendar and I didn't
see any listed. Keep up the good work, I can hardly wait for the next one!
Paula - Pittsboro, NC
Hi Paula,
How nice to hear from a medical professional who reads my work!....
I do appear in NC from time to time, in Charlotte, occasionally, and
in Concord, the triad area, (Waldenbooks in Durham is one of my favorite stores)
and other stores.
My next book, GRAVE CONCERNS, will be out in December, and I will be
making appearances December through February. I'll try to remember
to send you a notice next time I'm in your area.
Miss Essie is indeed awesome. I am thinking about opening a Miss
Essie's journal on my website for fans, just for fun. A place where
Miss Essie would write in her e-diary things that she finds
pertinent. Pithy sayings, observations, wisdom. It could be a place
where readers could send me things they think she might say, ....Just a thought!
As to Rhea and Mark... I think they finally worked things out in
GRAVE CONCERNS, though not the way I thought they would. I have to
admit that they took over and handled things REALLY different from what I expected.
Thank you again for the letter! Bookplates are on the way!

June 29, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I love, love, love your DR. Rhea books! I am in nursing school in
Charleston, SC right now and my course load is a bit lighter for
the summer. A friend pointed out DELAYED DIAGNOSIS last weekend in the bookstore
which I read in a day and went back for whatever they had
of yours on the shelf this weekend.......which was only DEADLY REMEDY ......so, I guess I am out of
order! Anyway, I wanted you to know how much I have enjoyed them and have the rest on order. I
will read what I can this summer because it will be back to the study grind soon!
Thanks, again!
Rebecca - Charleston, SC
P.S. What is a bookplate?
Hi Rebecca,
....Thank you so much for the nice letter! I'm
so glad you love, love, love the Rhea-Rhea
books! That means a lot to me, especially coming
from a soon to be medical professional. And from Charleston - Rhea's
former stomping ground.
I hope you finish PRESCRIBED DANGER before the "grind" starts and
then you can read GRAVE CONCERNS on Christmas break. :)
Thanks again for taking the time to write to me,
Gwen Hunter
PS-Bookplates are sticky backed cards that have the book title, etc.
on them that I personally sign and mail to fans that I
don't have the pleasure of meeting in person. I will gladly send
you some for your books, free of course. Just send me your mailing address.
June 24, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed the first two
books in the Dr. Rhea Lynch series. You make her seem so real. I am
just beginning the third volume and cannot wait until the next one
comes out? Do you have an estimated release date for book four? I
first found your books while I was in South Carolina this past
March. I am so glad that I did.
If it is still possible, you could send me a signed bookplate?....
....Rhea is a special mix of strength
and vulnerability, as are many of us. She falters, picks herself up
and tries again. A very real character. One that
I can easily relate to.
Lierre - Oshawa, Ontario,
Canada
Hi Lierre,
You have a lovely name, very reminiscent of the names from Louisiana,
where I spent summers while growing up!....
Your letter was so kind. I am glad you like my series and I look forward the
publication of GRAVE CONCERNS in December, 2003.
Bookplates are on the way.
Thanks so much for writing.
Gwen Hunter
June 23, 2003
Dear Mrs. Hunter:
This is the first time I have ever responded to a writer. First
please let me say that I have read three of your pervious writings
and I enjoyed them immensely. Out of the books
that I have read were DEADLY REMEDY, PRESCRIBED DANGER,
and BETRAYAL. Each book kept me wanting more. I couldn't
put the book down until I was finished which is difficult having a
three year old child. Many nights I went without sleep so I could finish your books.
Like I have said, I enjoy all of them but my favorite was BETRAYAL.
I
was wondering if I could have a listing of all your past works and if one of your books is
similar to the book, BETRAYAL.
Thank you very for your time and for your wonderful, exciting, and adventures books.
Sincerely,
Carolyn - Naples, FL
Hi Carolyn,
.... BETRAYAL was my favorite book too for a lot of reasons. It was followed by FALSE TRUTHS and
LAW OF THE WILD. These two books are in the same
setting and have some of the same characters as BETRAYAL.
You can see a listing of all my books on the BODY OF WORK page on
my website, and you can read a chapter of each to see if you think
one of the other novels would grab you the way BETRAYAL did.
Unfortunately all of my works, with the exception of the Rhea Lynch,
MD. Series novels, are currently out of print and hard to find.
But reprints of BETRAYAL and FALSE TRUTHS
are in the works.
Thank you so much for writing,
Gwen Hunter
June 22, 2003
Dear Gwen:
I am hooked on your series of books about Dr. Rhea Lynch. I am a resident of
upstate South Carolina and I can relate to some of
Rhea's experiences. My question is: Do you know
when the next book in the series will be
published? I hate to rush you! But February seems like forever ago and I read
DEADLY REMEDY in one sitting!
Please keep up the good work! I will watch your website for news.
Sincerely,
Carolyn - Simpsonville, SC
Hi Carolyn
I'm glad you like Dr Rhea-Rhea! I think she's pretty cool too! The
next Rhea-Rhea book, GRAVE CONCERNS, will
hopefully be out in December. I love the title and the cover
looks great! I just saw it for the first time a few days ago.
Thanks for writing!
Gwen Hunter
June 6, 2003
Dear Gwen,
I am now reading your second book, PRESCRIBED DANGER,
which I just love. I really enjoyed DELAYED DIAGNOSIS. I am an ICU/ER
in a small rural town in Kansas. Your medical info is very good. Can't wait to go out and
buy the third book in the series. I am an avid reader of mystery/romance and contpem. romance.
Shari - Pratt, KS
Hi Shari,
I am so glad you like my Rhea-Rhea. She is my favorite character ever
and is a thrill to write. And I NEED my medical readers for Rhea to
continue! So I thank you for loving her too! I have never been to
Kansas but I imagine that the strange and oddball characters I see
in my own small rural hospital in SC are universal.
Thanks for writing!
Gwen Hunter
June 2, 2003
Ms. Hunter,
I just finished DELAYED DIAGNOSIS! I enjoyed it so much that I had
to take it to work with me because I wanted to keep reading.....
I have read all of your books.
My only complaint is that I want MORE! I'll be looking forward to reading
you next book. ...
Keep writing FAST!
Patty
Hi Patty,
....Next in the series is GRAVE CONCERNS which
should be out by Christmas of this year.
Thanks for writing!
Gwen
May 30, 2003
Dear Gwen,
On a recent trip to the
bookstore, the manager asked me if I liked medical thrillers. I told her I really hate
reading them. As an RN, I have come to really
dislike the misuse of medical terminology, inaccurate portrayals of
interpersonal relationships between staff, and enough medical errors to
kill half the population in a small town. She then handed
me two books and told me to read them. If
I liked them, I could pay her later. If not,
pass them on. Of course, the two books were PRESCRIBED DANGER and DELAYED
DIAGNOSIS. I went back the next day to pay for them.
What a refreshing change
to read a novel that is accurate with reference to the setting and
background material. The attention to detail can make a difference. When
the characters descend into technical jargon, you have another ask for an
explanation. This happens in the real medical world.
Thank you.
I look forward to reading future books starring Rhea Rhea.
Linda - Panama City, FLHi Linda!
Wow! Now that's my kind of bookseller! Do you mind if I ask who she is? I'll send her a thank you.
.... I am so glad you liked the books! It means a
lot to me when medical people appreciate my work.
I work hard to make the medical jargon an integral
part of the storyline. And I have to admit that my editor -- who has no medical experience -- keeps me grounded for my non
medical readers! ....
Thank you for the nice letter,
Gwen Hunter
Gwen,
Just a quick note to let you know I've introduced your books to my BSN
classmates. They were bemoaning the lack of novels that showed the
medical profession with any accuracy. Just the type of intro that I needed.
What is really funny is that large or small hospital, we've seen many of the characters used
in your books.
Keep up the good work.
Hope to see you the next time you make it to Panama City.
Linda - Panama City, FL
Hi again Linda!
Thank you for your nice note -- I just got back from a week-long writers conference on the Georgia coast and DOVE into the mail!
...
Thank you SO much for sharing Rhea-Rhea with your medical friends. Rhea is such a great character and I LOVE writing about hospital situations. Only people who have been there can really appreciate that atmosphere! And I'm happy that you can see some of the characters from my rural setting in a larger hospital context! I have hopes that Mira will do another book after GRAVE CONCERNS, due out in December 2003, but of course, book
sales numbers will determine that, not me!
Best,
Gwen
May 27, 2003
Mrs. Hunter,
I just wanted to let you know that your books are incredibly
awesome. The first one hooked me, then when Prescribed Danger came
out, it really made me super excited for the third, and now, I
fully believe that Deadly Remedy is the BEST of
all of them. I can't wait for the next one, when
is that going to be released.
I would also like a bookplate thing.
Aimee - Iron River, MI
Hi Aimee,
.... Rhea-Rhea is a thrill to write. I NEED my readers to get excited
about her and support the series so the publisher will continue
publishing them! I thank you for loving Rhea!
The next book is GRAVE CONCERNS and will be released in December 2003 or January 2004.
Bookplates thingys are on the way!
Thanks for writing!
Gwen Hunter
May 24, 2003
Well, you asked what I thought --Gwen, Gwen, Gwen -
It's all your fault! You've kept me up late - I couldn't put the book
down - I tried to watch the War on Terrorism BUT Rhea-Rhea kept call me
back to the war of her own! What a timely exciting book! Michael Palmer
and Robin Cook could only wish that their works moved so fast, furious,
intense and committed to medical accuracy!
Perspicacious? What are you: Teacher, Crossword Puzzle Addict or Spelling
Bee Champion? Or just a sharpsighted, detecting humorist? Good thing this
ex-teacher works at the library...You sure keep me guessing!
Thanks for sharing your talents!
Lyn - Inverness, FL
Hi Lyn,
.... I refuse to apologize for you missing the War On Terrorism. <G>
My best, and thank you for writing,
Gwen
May 20, 2003
Hi Gwen,
I have to tell you that I really love your style of writing. I just have
a quick question for you though. With the way that you ended DEADLY REMEDY,
I was just wondering if you'd be having another Dr. Rhea Lynch novel coming
out soon? I really admire her personal strength, and can see a little
bit of myself in her. But, just so you know, after I finished DELAYED
DIAGNOSIS, it took me about 3 weeks to read the other two, I just couldn't
put them down!
Sincerely,
Stacee
Hi Stacee,
The next Rhea Lynch novel will hopefully be out in December, 2003. It
will be titled GRAVE CONCERNS.
I am glad you like Rhea-Rhea. She's the best, I feel like I'm just along
for the ride when I write about her!
Thanks for writing,
Gwen Hunter
May 5, 2003
Gwen,
How funny, that I've known you were a writer basically my entire life
but didn't read any of your books until recently. I didn't know what I
was missing!
In a 2 week period, I've read FALSE TRUTHS and started on the Dr Rhea
series. (Completing now both DELAYED DIAGNOSIS and PRESCRIBED DANGER I
have to say too that I am really looking forward to reading DEADLY REMEDY.
I just wanted to drop you a line and mention this to you. Your books really
are interesting and entertaining. I am officially addicted now.
Dr Rhea really comes to life... I cannot believe I waited so long to read
your books!
Well now you know that you have yet another fan in the area!
See you soon,
Melanie - Charlotte, NC
Hi Melanie,
.....Ah...a writer's dream...addicted readers! :)
I am delighted to have a new fan in the area, especially one I know!
I'm glad you are enjoying the Rhea Lynch Series. Let me know what you
think of DEADLY REMEDY. It's a little weirder than the others.
Thank you so much for writing. I am honored you would take the time to
do so.
Gwen
Hi Gwen,
I loved DEADLY REMEDY too! (completed the book in two days) I cannot wait
for GRAVE CONCERNS.
Melanie
May 3, 2003
Hi
I would just like to pass on my thanks for the really enjoyable books.
I don't know when I bought PRESCRIBED DANGER, but I only recently read
it & couldn't put it down. Whilst I am not remotely medically minded
I really enjoy books by Patricia Cornwell but they seem to be too slow
coming. Obviously they take a while to write, publish etc, but to a reader
who enjoys an authors work, it seems like an eternity between books. I
am so glad that I have found another author whose books I enjoy immensely.
I guess one of the things I like most about your work is that you talk
to people on 'average Joe's' level rather than over our heads as other
people do who obviously have a high amount of medical knowledge. It is
also nice to learn things from books and not even realize that you are
being taught something. I was so wrapped in your book and was pleased
when I found DEADLY REMEDY in the bookshops about a week after I finished
the first one....
I have no idea what a bookplate is but would appreciate receiving one....
Karen - Capalaba, QLD. Australia
Hi Karen!
I am always happy to hear from a fan from down under! Actually,
I had no idea that DEADLY REMEDY is already in the Aussie book shops and
am delighted!
How kind of you to say that the medical part was enjoyable. I do
work very hard to bring the meaning out of the medicalese that flies around
in hospitals. Even after nearly 30 years on the job in a medical
setting, it can be amazingly difficult to understand and I often stop
at work and ask "what is that? What does it mean?" Then I try
to make it clear for all us normal humans! ....
Thank you so much for writing and bookplates are on the way to you ASAP!
Or -- make that STAT!

I have just finished PRESCRIBED DANGER. It is the first
one of your books I have had the pleasure of reading, it was great and
I can't wait to get my hands on your other books. I live in Moncks Corner,
SC. (one of your little country towns but won't be much longer as we are
growing in leaps and bounds). ....
Your book was wonderful ! I admire the talent that brings such life to
characters, and a talent that will allow me to visit new place to the
point of being able to almost smell and taste new cultures (or in this
case a familiar one).
Good luck on your future endeavors, I will look forward to sharing your
vivid imagination. My husband is ill and requires a lot of care, reading
is not only an enjoyable past time but a way of escape that makes life
a little easier to accept, (a chance to focus on someone else's problems).
May God Bless and Thank you. I Love finding a new friends when I read
and I love Rhea!!!!!!
Deborah - Moncks Corner, SC.
Dear Deborah,
How nice to hear from someone close to home, someone who knows why we
southerners drink our tea sweet and understands that small town growth
comes at cost! I sure hope the city planners keep all the charm of Moncks
Corner intact even as the development goes on all around!
.... I am happy that I was able to give you moment of respite in a different,
yet familiar place. Rhea is my favorite character of all time and when
I write of Dawkins County it is an escape for me too!
Thank you so much for writing.....

April 25, 2003
Gwen:
Just noticed you will have another Rhea Lynch book out in December. THANK
GOODNESS! I've gotten totally addicted to the series. These books are
some of the best I've ever read. I'm recommending them to friends from
Georgia to Louisiana and getting them just as addicted as I am. Wish you
could write faster - I get impatient!
....I will say that I never expected to find another series I would anticipate
like I do the Eve Dallas series by J. D. Robb but I was wrong! Please
just keep on writing.
Thanks for hours of enjoyment.
Nan - Laurel, MS.
Hi Nan,
....Ahhh... a writer's dream....addicted readers!!
The subliminal messages I put in the books are working!
Thank you so much for recommending Rhea-Rhea to your friends! A lesser
known author like me really needs that. It is my hope the readers like
the series enough to keep it going through a lot more books. I have Rhea's
life planned for ten books or so, hopefully the publisher will have similar
plans!....
Thank you again for your nice letter!
Gwen Hunter
April 23, 2003
Dear Gwen,
Thank you for the Dr Rhea Lynch books. I love that the main characters
are so real and with the humor and Arlana and the dogs - I love it all.
I can hardly wait to read the fourth in this series. I read lots of books
and come across many that I do not care to finish but yours are a delight
from cover to cover. I guess it just comes back to caring about the characters
that you write about and what happens to them. Please keep writing and
the longer the book the better. Also whoever helps you with medical situations
and terminology does a great job at it all sounds so right on the money.
Great stuff!!!!
Yours sincerely,
Peggy - Woodbridge, VA.
Hi Peggy,
I am so glad you like Rhea-Rhea and her cast of family and friends. They
are indeed real to me, and I do so enjoy it when I enter their lives and
watch what happens!
I have lots -- LOTS! -- of medical help! The lab stuff I do because I
have over 27 years in the medical lab field, but the other stuff I study
HARD for and always ask the ER docs and nurses questions! I even bring
in scenes and ask what would happen here? How much meds? What order of
action? Can I hit the kid's daddy when he backhands his son across the
room? No? But I can have him arrested? Cool! Stuff like that!
Thank you so much for writing. Bookplates are on the way.

April 22, 2003
Hi,
Just wanted you to know I've just finished the latest Rhea-Rhea book and
loved it!
As so often happens for me I "happened" to find PRESCRIBED DANGER
at a used bookstore. I then went looking for others.
At the risk of upsetting you now that I've read the 3rd installment of
Dr. Rhea's life I am wondering when the 4th will be out??? LOL. If I wasn't
interested in reading more I wouldn't ask.
Glad to see that Mark is finally making headway with Rhea. Love Miss Essie.
We all need a guardian angel like her don't we? Not sure if I want to
meet Dr. John. Yuck! who would not want Dr. Rhea. I believe what I like
most about Dr. Rhea is that she seems so real. She's a heroine in the
end but a human one.
Congrats on a wonderfully written book! I belong to several reader groups
and be assured that I am passing along a recommendation for this one.
Thanks much for an enjoyable read.
Cathy - Bowling Green, KY
Hi Cathy,
.... I am delighted that you liked Rhea-Rhea and the rest of the crowd!
Used book stores are a great way to build a readership. I sometimes stop
in these stores when I travel, looking for treasures.
The next book, GRAVE CONCERNS, is planned to be out in December this year,
so the wait isn't as long as usual. Two books in one year!
Thank you for the recommendation on the series! That really means a lot
to me!
You mentioned you belong to readers groups. I'm thinking about starting
a program where I spend an hour, once or twice a month, with readers groups
from around the world. A different group each time of course. The group
would meet at a location with a speaker phone and I could chat with the
whole group. What do you think? Is this something you think readers groups
would enjoy?
Thank you so much for your nice letter!
Gwen Hunter
Gwen,
....I believe in your Dr. Rhea as much as I believe in Kate Shugak.
Women of the caliber of Dr. Rhea and Kate are fairly rare and I'm all
for promoting positive role models for women....
As to reading groups...yes, please!...Count me in! And again if I can
help at all do not hesitate to call on me.
Again, thanks so much for your kind email and I will look forward to GRAVE
CONCERNS.
Cathy - Bowling Green, KY

I just wanted to take the opportunity to say that I
*loved* DELAYED DIAGNOSIS, my first Gwen Hunter book. Absolutely
terrific! Especially with the flavor of the South. I felt
like I knew everyone and the story went fast and furious. Delicious!
I am prowling the stores for the rest of your books and just can't wait
for the new one!
Keep up the great work!
Lyn - Inverness, FL.
Hi Lyn,
I am so glad you liked DELAYED DIAGNOSIS and the southern characters!
They have been a hoot to work with and to see their lives come off the
page!....
Thank you so much for writing....

April 12, 2003
I have just finished reading your 3rd book on Dr Lynch.
It was a good as the other two, if not better! I started out reading the
second in the series and enjoyed it so much I backtracked and found the
1st one to read. Then I could hardly wait to get to the third.
Now January seems a long time away to have to wait for the next installment.
You can bet that I will be one of the first in line to purchase the next
story about Dr. Missy Rhea and Mark.
I would love to take advantage of the personalized, signed bookplate offer,
if it is still available. Whether it is or not I still look forward to
your next book.
Sincerely,
Janice - Ridge Manor, FL.
Hi Janice,
Thank you so much for the nice letter. It really means a lot when readers
take the time to write to me.
The next book in the series, GRAVE CONCERNS, is in the final editing stages
now and may be released in December instead of January. If so, you will
not have to wait quite so long! :)
Thanks again for writing, bookplates are on the way.
Gwen
April 5, 2003
Dear Ms. Hunter,
Wow! What an awesome book [DEADLY REMEDY]! I just finished it. You are
absolutely right when you say real life is more horrific than fiction.
I know that from experience. I am a dentist. ..... Some of the patients
that walk through my door....probably about the same as those who come
through the ER. Very interesting lifestyles and experiences.
So what's the real story on someone with Venetia's condition? That
was very interesting. Is there a chance someone with her condition
could walk again, or is that indeed a miracle? I find this stuff
very intriguing.
I just wanted to let you know that was the best book I've read in a while.
It was also the first book that I've read that's written by you. I see
I need to catch up on the first two -- read in reverse order. oh well.
I'm expecting my second child any day now. I know what I'll be doing on
the week I take off after having her (while she sleeps :) ). My patients
think I'm nuts for only taking a week off. They don't understand
how much we docs are needed. (I'll do half days for a few weeks after
that.) At least I'll have some good reading while recuperating.
Thanks for keeping me entertained for two days -- I couldn't put it down,
except for when my 2 yr old needed something.
Sincerely,
BriAnna - Rock Hill, SC.
Hi BriAnna,
You are a very brave woman to take only a week off after having a child!
The thought terrifies me! I'd likely take off a YEAR but then I'm a coward.
And if your patients think you are nuts -- well then maybe they'll make
a special trip back in to see for sure! I am tickled that you will
visit Rhea-Rhea while *layin-in*!
The story about Venetia is entirely fictional but I do know that doctors
have been happily surprised after unexpected improvement in a patient
with spinal cord injury. It is so poorly understood and the healing process
varies with each injury. So, seeming miracles do happen.....
Thank you for writing....

Hi!
I just wanted to let you know that I LOVE the Dr. Rhea Lynch books!
I also love that I KNOW about what you write about, I know places, seasons,
etc, etc, etc!! One of our favorite "special" places to eat
for my husband and I is the "Silver Cricket in Charlotte"!!!
It is also wonderful that a Southern, WOMAN...and others...are the SMART
ones for a change, not a hillbilly or a "belle" that has to
be saved with every other chapter, but a SMART woman who can take care
of herself...most of the time.....AND a smart, Southern Policeman who
isn't a "good ole boy" or from so far "back in the sticks"
he can't chew gum and think at the same time - so of course, he is the
big bully or worse.
Sometimes they just don't understand that we just take things slow, but
we are NOT slow in the South. Okay, okay, I will kick the "soap box"
away and stop. Sorry!
Really enjoyed your books, looking forward to more!!
Carla - Kannapolis, NC.
Hi Carla!
I am tickled pink that you like Rhea-Rhea and Mark and all the characters
from Dawkins County! I fell in love with them myself when I wrote DELAYED
DIAGNOSIS and insisted that my agent sell it only as a series, not as
stand-alone. I wanted to come back to them again and again.
I love to write in the southern dialect of the area, though I have had
some people from other parts of the county write to me and say I have
my characters speaking in stereotypes and that they all sound dumb. But
I just write back and say what you said -- we may speak in various dialects
and we may speak slowly, but we ain't slow! So you just get on your soap
box ANYTIME! We southerners need to speak up for ourselves!....
Thank you for writing...

Thanks for a great new series which I'm delighted to
have discovered.
Sometimes I just get lucky! I love medical stories, and yours are
delightfully cutting-edge. It's wonderful to find such current science
in your books.
I think an editor made a minor error on page 313 near the bottom in the
first sentence of the last paragraph. The word "tittle" should
be "titter" instead. I hope you don't mind my pointing that
out. (At least, that's what my dictionary says.)
...I really enjoyed your book and turned on a medical friend of mine to
your books, and she enjoys them, too. I hope I didn't come across as too
picky, but I have a cousin who's a published author, and he always likes
extra sets of eyes catching these things.
....Thanks again for great books,
Louise - Wilmington, DE.
PS. I'm curious how you know so much about the medical
stuff since it's very cutting-edge. It makes it a lot of fun to
read and learn some, too.
Hi Louise!
Your letter made me titter!
I certainly don't mind you pointing out the error. It is amazing that
these things happen with all the proof reading that goes on. That word
was probably changed automatically by a computer. Aren't computers great!
Now we always have a place to lay the blame!
Oh well. At least it wasn't a medical error. Those are the ones I dread
and I KNOW it will come. If DEADLY REMEDY goes into a second printing
maybe I can get my publisher to make the correction.
....As for the medical stuff - I have 27 years experience as a Lab Tech.
But the credit for the authenticity goes to all the doctors, nurses, and
other professionals that I badger with questions (see the acknowledgements
in each book)....
Thanks for writing,
Gwen Hunter
March 11, 2003
Keep them coming, I love your two books and am anxious
awaiting the next and the next and the next....
Donna - Lancaster, CA.
Hi Donna,
...GRAVE CONCERNS, next in the series, is in final editing stages now,
with a year-end release date. I hope you find it as entertaining.
Thank you....
Gwen Hunter
March 7, 2003
Hi Gwen,
I just finished DEADLY REMEDY (I've read all 3) and really enjoy these
stories. I'm sure the fact that I am a Chester County native helps. I
can just visualize some of the people, scenes, and events you describe.
Do you work in the medical field, possible at Piedmont Medical or is it
Chester County Hospital? When I was purchasing your last book the clerk
mentioned that he thought you worked in Rock Hill. If so what do you do?
I'm just curious. I did recognize some of the names you mentioned in your
credits. I will anxiously await volume 4; what does happen with Rhea and
Mark :) ?
I do really enjoy your books. I am a very avid reader (a teacher by profession),
and medical mysteries are my all time favorite. I am very pleased that
I found your books. Some books I only read from the library; others I
buy. Your books are in the "buy" group. I will look forward
to GRAVE CONCERNS. I'm sure it will be as exciting as the other three.
Gayle - Fort Mill, SC
Dear Gayle,
....I do live in Rick Hill and work at Chester County Hospital. I've been
there for over 20 years and love my job! The people are why it so much
fun to work there and it pleases me when natives feel a sense of home
with Dawkins County and the Dawkins hospital.
As to what happens with Rhea and Mark... Ah, that would be telling! Actually
I did not know what was going to happen at the end of book three, DEADLY
REMEDY. I had some serious things to work out -- which are settled in
book four, GRAVE CONCERNS out in December.
I'm glad you like the series, and hope you'll tell all your friends about
Rhea-Rhea! She's my favorite character ever, and only faithful readers
will keep her around for a long time!
Thanks for writing!

March 3, 2003
Hi Gwen,
I'm sure you don't remember me, but I met you at a Books A Million in
Birmingham, Alabama weeks ago. I had never read your books. The day I
met you, I purchased your latest book in the Rhea Lynch, MD series, DEADLY
REMEDY. I also bought the first novel DELAYED DIAGNOSIS. I had to go back
and get the second novel PRESCRIBED DANGER. I thoroughly enjoyed all three
books. I am anxiously waiting for your next book. Keep up the good work.
Nina - Birmingham, AL.
Hi Nina!
....I DO remember you! I grew up with a Nina and your name stuck in my
memory when we met! I am so glad you liked my novels! Rhea is a
wonderful character -- so full of angst and characteristics that can be
developed in future books! I love her!....
Thanks for writing!

Dear Gwen,
The week of xmas my husband was laid off, thankfully he was called back
to work 2 days ago. Needless to say life has been a little stressful.
As a gift I was given your 3 Dr. Rhea novels. All I can say is thank you
Gwen for some much needed stress relief. I loved them. Rhea, Mark, Risa,
Cam, Shirl, and Miss Essie and everyone at Dawkins. I feel like I've made
some wonderful new friends, My birthday is in a few days, I asked for
more of your books. Although I am a new fan, I know I will be one for
a very long time. You are a very talented writer. I can't wait to read
about Dr. Rhea again. I love to read and you make it more enjoyable. This
may be my second email, my 3 year old hit the keyboard just before I was
going to send.
Sincerely,
Maria - New Haven, CT.
Hi Maria,
Thank you so much for the nice comments!
I am glad I was able to give you a moment's respite from difficult times.
I hope this letter finds you and your family in a better economic situation.
Rhea and crew have become friends to me also. Sometimes it seems like
they are writing the books! I am looking forward to a long series run
with the help of true fans like you!
Bookplates are on the way. Thanks for asking!

I have two chapters to go and I might have to sneak
somewhere and hide so I can finish the book. I snatch your books up as
soon as I see them without looking at what the book is about because I
know for sure there will be nothing but joy in reading them.
I guess my favorite character is Miss Essie- somehow you must help her
find the fountain of youth or stop writing your books when she dies. My
next favorites are Rhea and Cam. I just finished the chapter where Miss
Essie told them both off and to get their lives straight. Miss Shirl is
a hoot too.
Thank you for many hours of reading pleasure you are awesome.
Sincerely
Anngrey
Hi Anngrey!
What a wonderful name! And a wonderful letter!
.... I am so glad you enjoy my writing, especially the Dawkins County
characters. It is seldom that characters are so real to me and so alive.
It means a lot to have readers enjoy them too.
Thanks for writing!

I have just finished reading the third book in the Dr.
Rhea Lynch series and just loved all three books. The stories are accurate
(I'm an ER nurse) and interesting keeping you hooked until the very end.
Unfortunately I just read all 3 books in the past two weeks so it's going
to be a long time before I get to meet her again. She's an interesting
character and I sense there are many stories left to be told of her private
life. I just love Mark. He is the perfect boyfriend for her. I hope their
relationship keeps getting better. I hope you will have her meet up with
her snooty rich grandmother that disinherited her mother and her. Maybe
she could her grandmothers favorite great-grandchild from choking on a
grape (one that the grandmother gave him/her while they were visiting
near Rhea's emergency room) That would make the grandmother beholding
to her whether she liked it or not and she would have to recognize what
a wonderful person her granddaughter turned out to be without her help!
So much for plots I'm sure you have many of your own planned. ....I cant
wait till December to read the new book in the series. Two of my daughters
are now into the series also. Just keep 'em coming!!!!....
Thank you again for Rhea Lynch. She is a great read!!!
Pauline
Hi Pauline!
....I am so glad you are enjoying the series. It really means a lot to
me, especially coming from a medical professional.
I agree that Mark is the one for Rhea, but they seem to have a rocky road
ahead for them as both are so hardheaded and independent. It is my hope
the readers like the series enough to keep it going through a lot more
books so that Rhea-Rhea can indeed get to meet her grandmother and resolve
that issue....
Thank you for your nice letter!

Hi,
I have just discovered your website and the fact that you have an email
address! I hope you don't mind me emailing you but I have a question.
I have read your DeLande series many times and really enjoy them, however
I haven't been able to find any books in the series since LAW OF THE WILD
and I was just wondering if there are any books that continue the story
or if not, do you have plans for any?
Your books starring Rhea Lynch also sound pretty good so I'll be giving
them a try in the meantime!
Thanks,
Heather - Slough, England
Hi Heather!
....There have been no DeLande books since LAW OF THE WILD in 1998.
I wanted to continue the series, and I have the next book planned out,
but the publisher was not interested in any more! What a shame as
I LOVE the weird characters it gave me the opportunity to work with!
I have fingers crossed that SOME publisher will want a DeLande book someday!
The new series has a VERY different feel, much more commercial and cosmopolitan.
Let me know what you think.
Thank you for your nice letter!...

Hi Gwen,
I don't understand why you are not on the best sellers list!! I
believe you will be before long. I have been an avid reader for
50 years (worked, raised 3 sons), but when ever I had free time I had
my nose in a book.
Recently had a torn and detached retina and lost some sight in my right
eye but that left eye is still "reading away". I recently
discovered you, and without a doubt you are the best author of medical
thrillers (maybe the Best author!!). I have all your books but 2
(even the ones written under Gary Hunter). I cannot find STOLEN
CHILDREN or LAW OF THE WILD. Do you have paperbacks of these I could
purchase? Used would be fine - as long as I can read your words.
I have tried all the suggested places on the computer.
I have never written a famous person before. I think you are the
BEST.
It would be my pleasure to hear from you.
Thank you for reading my E-Mail.
Phyllis - Salem, SC.
Hi Phyllis,
Thank you for the kind words. As for bestsellerdom... From your
mouth to God's ear!!! ....
My family has bad genes for eyes on both sides of the family. ... So I
understand....
STOLEN CHILDREN is the UK version BETRAYAL. Do you have BETRAYAL?
LAW OF THE WILD is very hard to find. Even I don't have a paperback
copy to sell! My secretary tells me there are a few listed on
amazon.com
....
Let me know if you want a STOLEN CHILDREN. I do have a couple copies
of it....
Thank you for letting me be your first "famous" person to write
to!

February 14, 2003
Well you did it again. Kept me from cooking a decent
meal, ironing, making beds, etc. because I was so engrossed in reading
DEADLY REMEDY. Picked it up and I was a goner. It also brought back
memories of PRESCRIBED DANGER.
On the local news this evening they were showing the viewers how to make
a "safe room" by taping up windows, vents, doors etc in the
event of a terrorist attack with airborne chemicals. They seem to think
that the air would be "safe" within two to three hours. This
all sounds like something from the Twilight Zone. Didn't intend to get
morbid. Thanks for Rhea, Marisa and that hunk Mark. Don't we all wish
we had a Miss Essie in our lives.
I wondered what you did when you weren't writing?
Thanks for all the wonderful hours of reading.
Gail - Duluth, GA.
Hi Gail!
Great letter! Very entertaining!
....I refuse to apologize for keeping you from housework!!! In fact, I
am delighted! The characters in Dawkins County keep me from it all the
time. They are so real to me that I am not happy unless I am involved
in writing a book with them.
And what do I do when not writing? I currently work full time on weekends
(17 hour days) at a laboratory in a small hospital like the one where
Rhea works. And I try to keep a husband and a 2 small Pomeranians fed
and happy! And yes, we all need a Miss Essie in our lives.
The current events are indeed scary -- Rhea seems to live in a cutting
edge world where subjects for her to work on are never-ending!
Thank you for your nice letter!....

Hi Gwen,
I just finished your book PRESCRIBED DANGER and I need to tell you (like
you haven't heard this before) It was so enjoyable I did not want to put
it down even after I was done reading it. I'm looking forward to
reading the next book on Dr. Rhea Lynch. I like this woman she's
everything I wish I could be. ... I'm soooo glad to have gotten
your book for Christmas....
Tracey - Cape Breton, North Sydney, NS. Canada
PS: hope you are having a great day and hopefully you didn't get bombed
with as much snow as we did. People are actually throwing shovels
at snow plows!
Hi Tracey,
.... I too would love to be like Rhea --
young, tall and skinny with the energy and drive to actually run 5 miles
a day! ...

Gwen,
Forgive me for using your name with such familiarity, I met you at Montgomery
Mall at a bookstore and you were gracious and kind enough to sign your book
for me personally. Have completed reading your book...DEADLY REMEDY. Found
your creativity and skill with the written word exceptional. With both my
son and daughter in college this year, and having set aside painting oils
for a personal "sabbatical", I have an abundant amount of time
now set aside as "free" time. I was moved in puzzlement as well
as compassion...in reference to the main character. A character with such
firm convictions on about every topic. Seemingly well versed in "medical"
understanding...but never portraying any "religious" understanding.
Perplexed me. A kind of "skepticism" in place of "love".
It is not my desire to offend. On the contrary, I recognize an exceptional
writer when the work is before me. Obviously well-trained in the medical
field...and seemingly an exceptional person of character when I met you.
I am just surprised. Surprised by the lack of "substance" in the
portrayal of faith...of knowledge...of true knowledge of a God who cares
for men. A God who is near as well as far. Not some god in some distant
"assigned" place in a man's mind. But a real God who cares for
men. Meeting you in person, there was something about you that touched my
heart, a need to do no harm to another's "feelings".
I like you. Pardon my boldness....but if I may press on further...to have
no understanding of a man's soul is a waste of a human mind. Soul is eternal.
Doctors die, pass away, never remembered with time, replaced by other doctors,
new generations. Authors pass away, set aside, never to be remembered. The
new always replacing the old. Most never making any real difference in having
lived at all. Not a real difference toward mankind. The soul is eternal...something
worth investing in...to investigate the soul of a man. Now it would be something
exceptional for an exceptional mind to investigate, to delve into the deep
into the inner soul.
There is a type of glossing over...hiding a lack...of understanding...I
see as a flaw in the main character. For there is a difference between "religious
beliefs" and truth. Men make up their own religious beliefs with which
they are comfortable and which ask nothing of them in the reality of becoming
a changed person. To know the truth causes real change within an individual,
change which is noticed by all those around him. A change for "good".
Religious beliefs lead a man astray from the truth...mislead men from discovering
God, causing men to settle for something which is less than the whole truth.
Settling for partial and not whole truth. I would have thought the main
character to sharp a "chick" to settle for that. Partial truth...is
no truth at all. Wisdom knows the difference between the ordinary beliefs
of unordinary men...knows the Exceptional. Exceptional people do not settle
for second best "knowledge", partial truth...they take hold of
first prize, whole truth and everything it contains within it. First prize
is not a set of beliefs, rather it is a personal relationship with a living
God...who does care about men. All men, the loving as well as the cold,
self-focused, vain..."what's in it for me" men. You ARE an excellent
author.
Food for thought...The Mystery. The Mystery of Existence...the chance to
write a book filled with the answer all men are searching for each in his
own way, men who would pay a precious price to find. Available to men of
exceptional mind just for the asking. Maybe it could be entitled..."Real
life with a real God". I don't just write anyone...I write people I
like. Something you said is still ringing in my ears. You said you were
told to write what you know. Some write about medicine, some men write about
faith. Each man should write what he has knowledge on...and not some kind
of mumbo-jumbo. Going and sitting in a church is a concept devised by men...a
relationship with God is something entirely different ...something created,
penned by the Creator of men, He who is the Author of Life. Dig in. It is
fantastic journey some men decide to write about and change the hearts of
men...sometimes even changing the heart of a whole generation.
Sincerely...His blessing of grace...be given as yours.
Cheri
Hi Cheri!
Thank you so much for the great letter!....
I appreciate your sentiments about life and spiritual growth. I am glad
Rhea-Rhea's plight touched your heart. But remember these things:
- You are already there. So am I. Rhea is not.
- Rhea is a fictional character.
- In order for her to be interesting she must be flawed. And then she
must grow and change. Therein lies the story.
- How does she grow and change? We'll have to wait and see!
- Rhea is not me.
As a writer I have to move slowly and carefully in the spiritual realms
to find the lost heart of people. I can't just shove faith down their
throats as most people fear what faith means because they never experienced
it. And they fear change.
Thanks for your caring letter! Again, I really appreciate your concern....

Hi Gwen - I discovered your books in December 2002.
My girlfriend, Jeanette, turned me on to you. I voraciously read the first
two and picked up DEADLY REMEDY last week. I read the darned thing in
24 hours. It was terrific. I just couldn't put it down. All I can say
is "WRITE FASTER". Your books keep me on the edge of my seat.
I take them with me everywhere and read every spare moment I can....
Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into these thoroughly
enjoyable books. My husband is a short story writer and I have seen how
an author sweats over his/her work. I am glad you are continuing the series
and I anxiously await book 4, GRAVE CONCERNS, in December.
....I've just finished some of Tess Gerritson's medical thrillers but
they just didn't score as highly as yours do (with me anyway).... they
held my interest but didn't have the same wonderful characterizations
as yours, your interpersonal relationships add a great deal to your stories...
and the fact that they carry over from book to book make each read like
another visit with a good friend....keep writing.
Karen - Tinley Park, IL.
Hi Karen,
I'm so glad you are enjoying Rhea-Rhea's adventures! And I'm glad Jeanette
turned you on to my books. Lesser known writers really need that....
I'm writing as fast as I can! Writing is easy you know. Just ask your
husband. You just stare at a blank screen until blood comes out of your
forehead.....
Thank you...

Dear Gwen;
I thoroughly enjoyed DELAYED DIAGNOSIS and look forward to reading DEADLY
REMEDY. Since some of my friends discovered your books I have taken much
good natured ribbing about being an author, while keeping my talents a
secret. Believe me, it's no secret.....I can't write!
But, I'm glad you can.
Sincerely,
Gwen Hunter
Hi Gwen!
....How strange to be writing to Gwen Hunter! There can't be more than
2 or 3 of us in all the world! And here's another coincidence, some of
my friends are discovering I'm an author!
I am glad you and your friends are enjoying Rhea-Rhea.
Thanks for writing,
Gwen Hunter, too

Dear Ms. Hunter,
The orientation days at Winthrop University last summer found me without
something to read. (That's like not being able to breath in my life.)
I wandered over to the University book store "The Book Worm"
and came across your first book. I read it in about 3 days time. (There
is a lot of down time at Freshmen orientation at Winthrop.) I beat the
bushes around Pickens, Easley & Anderson before I found your second
book. I have enjoyed them both. I look forward to finding the third one.
I'm sorry you can't write
them as fast as I can read them, but please keep them coming. I am a nurse
in a rural South Carolina area, and I am very familiar with the Rock Hill,
York, and Chester areas. I feel like I'm reading about home.
I am a Yankee transplant from Chicago, Pittsburgh, & Florida, but
after living over here in Pickens, SC (Just north of Clemson) for 12 years
this is home now. I hope to see you in Columbia at the end of the month.
I would love to have a book plate for any of your books. My mailing information
is listed below. Again, thank you for the pleasant break in my very hectic
day, I love finishing my day with old friends on the written page.
Sincerely;
Pam - Pickens, SC.
PS: If you need any other rural medical info please
let me know - do I have the stories for you.
Dear Pam,
It is so nice to hear from a new fan, especially one who picked up the
book in my home town store! I am very familiar with Pickens, having been
through there several times. It is pretty rural with a Dawkins-like flair
too. ...
As for those stories - I know you'll appreciate this: My editor has made
me take some things out of the books. Although some anecdotes are loosely
based on things that really happened she says readers would never believe
it!
I'll send your bookplates out in case you can't make it to signings.
Thank you for your interest in my books!

Hi Gwen,
Just wanted to tell you that your books are GREAT. You are a wonderful
writer. I hope to see you the next time you drop in at Borders Books in
Douglasville....
I would love to have your bookplates to put in my autographed copies of
your books. Thanks for the bookplates and thank you for the care you so
obviously put into your writing....
Jody - Douglasville, GA.
Hi Jody,
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying Rhea-Rhea's adventures.
Sorry I missed you at you store. I did pass through Douglasville in February
but it was in the wee hours of the morning. ...
Bookplates are on the way, thanks for asking!

Congratulations on Another Winner.
Having read your other two Dr. Lynch books, DEADLY REMEDY was your best
yet!!
And what a fascinating plot... it just kept bouncing until the very end
of the book. Here's wishing you continued inspiration. And, could you
write a little faster, please :)
Y E S, please add me to your bookplate list, and thank you.
Eileen - Douglasville, GA.
Hi Eileen,
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the books. I'm writing as fast as I can!
GRAVE CONCERNS, next in the series, is in the final editing stages and
will be out near year end....

Please send a bookplate for DEADLY REMEDY. ...
I love your books!!! I can't get enough of them...just want them to last
forever.
...Just finished DEADLY REMEDY a few days ago. You just get better with
every book, if that is possible.
Thanks,

Hi Sandy,
I'm so glad you like the Rhea-Rhea series!
Your bookplates are on the way....

January 28, 2003
Hi Gwen,
I would love a bookplate for any of the books. I am just finishing DEADLY
REMEDY. I have only 74 pages to go and think I will kick my shoes off
and curl up with it right now! The weather is gloomy and I have a cold
so I am going to be good to myself. Have really enjoyed your books and
hope it won't be a long wait until the next one.
Thanks.
Judy - New Lenox, IL.
Hi Judy,
Yes you should be good to yourself, you deserve it! Rhea should learn
to do that, maybe she will. There is nothing better than curling up with
a good book by the fire on a gloomy day. Well, almost nothing!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the books and thank you for writing.
Bookplates are on the way.

I have enjoyed reading about Dr. Rhea Lynch...being
snowed in this weekend was the perfect opportunity to read uninterrupted!
I lived in Rock Hill, moving just two short years ago, and this fact captured
my interest as you write about locations in South Carolina I am familiar
with. I have now gotten my Mom and sister interested, and waiting in line
to read PRESCRIBED DANGER (with the snow, I just finished and will pass
it along)!
Anyway, I was interested in receiving an autograph bookplate....
Allyson - Camden, SC.
Dear Allyson,
.... I too was snowed in - 7+inches (My poor little Pomeranians were hip
deep in the fluffy stuff. A comical sight, actually!)....I too used the
days for some good reading. I am delighted you found my book to curl up
with.
Thank you for writing, your bookplate is on the way.

Hi Gwen:
My name is Melanie and I am a dear friend of Laurie. She has spoken so
highly of you and your work I feel I know you! She loaned me a copy of
both your books and I must tell you, I read them cover to cover in a matter
of days! I am a 15 year veteran of the medical field, so these books were
right up my alley. I did so enjoy them. I read Prescribed Danger in just
3 1/2 days! I just couldn't put it down. (That's saying a lot for a mother
of 4, ages 7, 9, and twins 18 months)
Anyway, I'm excited about the new book and can't wait for it to come out.
Maybe I'll venture down to Rock Hill for the book signing and get an opportunity
to meet you.
Thank you for a great read!
Melanie
p.s. If you ever decide to do a hard back in these books, please let me
know....I'm trying to stock my library! (although these three are a great
start)
Hi Melanie,
.... I'm glad [Laurie] loaned the books to you. That is the best way I
know to find new fans, especially fans in the healthcare field! ....
There are no current plans for the Rhea series to be put in hardback,
but it could happen, I suppose, if the sales continue to rise. That is
a publisher decision at this point, not mine, and bottom lines are all
important!
Thank you for writing!
Gwen
January 15, 2003
Dear Ms. Hunter,
First of all, I would like to tell you that I loved! both PRESCRIBED DANGER
and DELAYED DIAGNOSIS. They were both tremendous works of art! And I am
waiting in anticipation for the third book in this series! Sorry about
all the exclamation marks, I just can't help it, I do so love your books.
The question I have is, where in Toronto, Canada can I find all your other
books. The major book stores do not carry your body of work, and I am
frustrated. Even Amazon.ca does not have your older books.
Would you happen to know how I may acquire all your books? Thank you so
much for your time, I do appreciate it, truly. ...
Yours most sincerely,
Roseanne - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Hi Roseanne,
I am so glad you liked the books. ...I love the exclamation marks!!!
I know how hard it is to find my backlist on the market, but good news!
I am considering reprints with a trade paperback publisher, and hope to
announce publication of BETRAYAL and FALSE TRUTHS by March.
Meanwhile, there are usually a few used copies available at amazon.com,
barnes&noble.com, or half.com.
There are links to these sites on the ORDER
page. If you can't find the book you want
let me know. I may have a copy I can sell you directly.
Than you for writing - bookplates are on the way!
Gwen Hunter
January 9, 2003
Dear Gwen:
I love your books!
Just finished your second book in the Rhea Lynch series - PRESCRIBED DANGER
- and it was great! Also inspired me to check on your bio because I have
been wondering about your medical background.
The technical aspects of your books are pretty right-on. I used to be
an ER nurse (RN/Mobile Intensive Care Nurse) - I did that for 13 years
and decided I didn't want to be a 65 year old nurse, so I went to law
school. I have been a lawyer for the past 12 years and enjoy it, but my
real goal is to be a writer like yourself. Lord knows, I have some stories
to tell!!
Anyway, do you have any tips for someone like me who would like to take
a stab at writing? ...
...I live in a place similar to where you live - in the Eastern Sierras.
My home is bordered by forest service property on all sides, and I can
watch the wild life scamper and the snow fall from my office windows.
My three Himalayan cats (Merlin, Witkin and Puma) take turns helping me
work, or complicate my life by walking across the computer keyboard!
My husband and I feel blessed to be living in such a beautiful place.
I would appreciate hearing from you! Keep up the good work - I really
like your style!
Mary - June Lake, CA.
Hi Mary,
.... Though not nearly so removed from city life as you, I too have a
wonderful view out my back windows of woods, a creek, and wild life. My
hubby and I watch the hawks' mating flight each spring, possum and
raccoon. Occasional deer and wild turkeys.
As to your writing questions, let me tell you the math. You seem like
a wise woman and a strong, down to earth one as well. Take a deep breath.
This is what they tell me. The figures hurt. It is estimated that:
One in 100 people want to write a novel.
One in that 100 start a novel.
One in that 100 finish a novel.
About one in 50 find an agent.
Less than ten percent in that 50 ever find a publisher.
It is a VERY competitive business, one where you never see or meet the
competition for the few spaces in the publishers' lists. That's the bad
news. The good news? Publishers and agents are STILL looking for talented,
driven writers. You may be one. What to do first? Write a book. Finish
it. Polish it. Then rewrite and re-polish it. That is the first step.
... The biz is competitive, but then there are PODs
... . You can get published with iUniverse easily, at a small outlay of
cash. You might want to see their website.
(webmaster note: here is a link to iUniverse,
the leading independent publisher.
)

... I have seen how a really driven person can beat the odds. I personally
know several talented female writers who got agents in the last couple
years, and so far, all are still on the way to publication. One is in
print with her 2nd novel with a major NY publisher.
It takes talent and luck and LOTS of hard work. But
it can be done!
I suggest you go to www.mysterywriters.org,
see about joining that writers organization. When you have a finished,
polished manuscript, you can follow the advice there on how to find an
agent. It is the best site and organization I know for helping writers
find their own creative path to publication.
Good luck! And thanks again for your interest in my
books.
